Black Guitar
Out of a tattered brown case, he pulls her out
Carefully running his rough hands over her ribs
Admiring her curves, her Ebony finish
The studded black strap is Her Resilience that he drapes diagonally across his shoulder
Prepared to play her lest she be silenced any longer
Lest he be banished to suffer alone and without an ear
He slowly tunes her to meet his needs
With each stroke his fingers release echoing vibrations inside of her hollow
She has a different response for every graze
Each gentle pinch and pluck with a purpose
For her response to his fondling of her strings
Urge her tune to be heard high and low as he directs
Sliding his fingers along the base of her neck
He moans his agonies away in the blues of his Hell
Each trial carried off of his breath and into the wind
As tears are shed within each word spoken off of his lips
Able to release his woes, the invisible knapsacks of stress
Carried by the Black Man
He is not meant to bear this load alone
His perfect vessel resting within his lap
So he taps her lower bout with his thumb for emphasis
His wails return to a low growl, as he has released his troubles
It matters not that there is not one familiar pair of eyes returning his gaze
As it is the pain in their eyes that is realized as their common ground
Her strap of Resilience is removed from his shoulder
The tattered case’s latches loudly piercing through the
Ongoing mental chatter—
For he heard a drop of sweat hit the wooden floor beside him
He knows that silence can often state better what no words can
Instrument in hand, he takes his leave of their probing stares
Smiling
